Founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller, Habitat for Humanity began in a small town in rural Georgia. Fuller, an attorney and businessman, had an idea to make shelter a "matter of conscience", with the goal that one day everyone would have at least a simple, decent place to live.
Modest homes, built with volunteer labor and some donated materials, were sold at cost to qualified low-income families. No interest and only a small down payment were required. Homeowners' monthly payments plus donations and other money raised, were recycled to build even more homes. The idea grew! By 1992 there were over 800 affiliates of Habitat across the United States and active projects in 40 foreign countries.
Habitat homes provide families and individuals an opportunity for stability and personal growth that they could not otherwise realize.
