 Having problems with using FTP?

More than likely, the FTP server is working just fine. Some sites on the internet are more popular places than others and, therefore, becoming "bottle necked". Think about traffic. When a large amount of cars want to travel down the same road, nobody moves. This is the same principal associated with FTP sites.
Many of the larger FTP sites such as Microsoft and Netscape have several different FTP sites which house the same information and files. If you cannot connect with one site, you may want to try one of the others. They are usually listed when your anonymous login is denied.

To login as anonymous on any given site, type the userID 'anonymous' when you are prompted and type your email address for your password. If anonymous logins are accepted at that site you will see a message similar to "anonymous login okay, please read the readme files".

From here you will probably need to change directories on the remote system until you find the file you wish to download. Then you can download directly to your PC at home (with a PPP connection) or to your home directory (shell accounts).  If the file is too big to fit into your home directory, try changing to the /tmp directory and downloading there.
