How to set up an email account for the first time using Outlook Express for Mac OS
(Mac OS 8.5 - Mac OS 9)

Outlook Express is typically installed in one of the following locations:

Macintosh HD:Applications:Internet Applications:Microsoft Internet: Outlook Express
Macintosh HD:Applications (Mac OS 9):Outlook Express 5.02 Folder

Or, you might see an icon on your desktop for 'Mail'. The Mail icon will launch whichever default email client is selected in your Internet Control Panel.

Microsoft Office 2001 includes an application called Entourage. It's essentially Outlook Express, with more features.

  1. Double-click on the Outlook Express icon. If you've never used the program, you will see the following window. Select the settings as shown.

  2. On the Setup Assistant page 2, enter your name, and follow the directions to go to the next page.

  3. Enter your email address you've gotten from cowboy.net.

  4. You're setting up a POP (Post Office Protocol) account. Select 'POP' , and fill in your mail server addresses.
    POP Server: mail.cowboy.net
    SMTP Server: mail.cowboy.net

  5. Your Account ID is the first part of your email address with cowboy.net.
    Example: username@cowboy.net

  6. Give your account a name. The name you pick doesn't affect how the program works.
Place a check in Include this account in my Send and Receive schedule.

  7. Click Finish. Congratulations! Your Outlook Express settings are configured.
The Setup Assistant for Microsoft Entourage is almost identical, and is as easy to follow as this one.
