How to set up your PPP connection using Mac OS 9
These steps walk you through the use of the Internet Setup Assistant. This Mac OS component makes it easier to make all the necessary Internet configuration changes at once.

1. Double-click on the Internet Setup Assistant icon. Macintosh HD: Applications (Mac OS 9): Utilities: Internet Setup Assistant |

3. The information mentioned here will be provided in these instructions. Click on the small right arrow in the lower right-hand corner of the window. |

4. Type in a name to remind you what this configuration is for. For example, you might to enter "Cowboy Net" or something like that. Make sure Modem is selected along the bottom. Then click on the right arrow. |

5. Select the appropriate manufacturer and model from the list of modems. Unless your modem is plugged into the Printer port, leave the Port set to Modem Port. If you have an iMac or newer Macintosh, chances are you have an Internal Modem. If your phone line uses Touch Tone, make sure Tone is selected. In most cases, you'll leave "Ingnore dial tone" unchecked. Then click on the right arrow. |

6. Enter the appropriate phone number for your area. Click here for a list of available phone numbers. Enter your user ID and your password in the spaces provided. Then click on the right arrow. |

7. Cowboy.net doesn't require a PPP connect script. Make sure No is selected. Then click on the right arrow. |

8. An IP address will be supplied for you dynamically each time you log in (rather than manually). So make sure No is selected. Then click on the right arrow. |

9. For the Domain Name Server's address, enter these two: The host name is cowboy.net. This is optional. Then click on the right arrow. |

10. To indicate your return address on e-mail you send through "mailto:" links on web pages, enter your e-mail address in the first box, in the format username@cowboy.net. Then click on the right arrow. |

11. In this space, enter your username@popserver, in this case it's username@mail.cowboy.net (This is for connecting to the server to get incoming messages.) The SMTP server is also mail.cowboy.net (This is for outgoing e-mail you create when you click on "mailto:" links.) Then click on the right arrow. |

12. Enter the address for the newsgroup server: news.cowboy.net Then click on the right arrow. |

12. You won't have to deal with proxy servers, so make sure No is selected. Then click on the right arrow. |

13. That wraps it up! If you want to connect right away, make sure the "Connect when finished" checkbox is selected, then click on Go Ahead. |

You can open a PPP connection either by opening an Internet application, such as a Web Browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer), or by opening the Remote Access Status application from the Apple Menu, then click on Connect. This will dial the phone and connect you to the Internet. You may then use any Internet application which you may already have or can download from the Internet.
