Mallorca .................................. ........................................ Return to Homepage

Mallorca is a Spanish island in the Mediterrain Sea some 100 miles or so off the east coast of Spain. It's the largest of the Balearic Islands and is an absolutely wonderful place to visit. My family and I first visited Mallorca in the spring of 1979 when we were living along the north coast of Africa in Algeria. We spent a few days in Palma which is Mallorca largest city and enjoyed our time very much. We had expressed a hope of returning at some point but had no real expectations of doing so. However, in March of 1997, we and another couple spent a week there and had a great time.We stayed at the Aucanada Club in Alcudia on Mallorca's north shore through a timeshare exchange and enjoyed it very much. Alcudia was founded in 123 A.D. by the Romans and there are still Roman ruins in the area.

There's much more to see and do than one can possibly do in a week but we did our best to see and do all that we could. We went to Cabo de Formentor, the northermost point on the island, where the rock outcropings offer some beautiful seascapes.

We visited Pollenca with its old churches and climbed the 365 steps to the top of the Hill of Calvary, then visited the monastery at Lluch.

We went to Palma and visited the beautiful old Cathedral of Palma, visited the old palace, La Sao, walked along the tree-lined Paseo Borne and the Via Roma and went to Plaza Mayor and the San Francisco church.

One day we visided the Gordiola glass factory, the Majorca Pearl factory and showroom and had a superb three hour, seven course, suckling pig lunch in Randa. It was a nice day and one of my most memorable lunches ever.

We went to the east coast of the island via Arta where we visited an old castle and church, then continued on to the costal town of Cala Rajada where we visited the Caves of Arta.

We visited Valldemosa in the mountains west of Palma. It's one of Mallorca's most visited places, in part because of the beauty of it's natural surroundings, in part because of the tranquility of the town and, in part, because of some of Valldemosa's famous former residents. Chopin is said to have composed some of his work while living there and George Sand, the author of AWinter in Mallorca, spent time here while writing his book. Along Mallorca's rugged west coast is the town of Banyalbufar literally perched on the side of a mountain high above the sea. From the little town one is offered a spectacular view of the sea far below. Because of the very steep slope of the mountains around the little town, the entire area is terraced to reduce errosion which adds to the beauty.
